A Hero and a Scholar
It is with great sadness that this newsletter brings the news of Doug’s passing.
Douglas W. Richardson, of Boca Raton, Fl, who co-founded G.O.A.LS., INC (Go Out And Live successfully), died March 15th, 2007 at his home. He was sixty-two (62).
Doug and his wife Nelda founded G.O.A.L.S., INC. in 1997 to assist Individuals with spinal cord injuries after he was involved in a car/truck accident, which left him a quadriplegic. Over the years G.O.A.L.S. has helped provide greater mobility and independence for those with spinal cord injuries. To date, we have funded 84 projects in 30 states. It was Doug’s dream to fund in each state in the union.
Doug was born June 27, 1944 in Buffalo, New York and grew up and attended high school in the Village of Brocton, in Western New York State. Prior to his injury Doug resided in Auburn and Syracuse where he made a living in sales and management for the Houghton-Mifflin Company’s school division. He was also an off-campus supervisor of student teaching at the State University of New York College in Cortland, NY.
In 2005 Doug was inducted into the Brocton Central High School’s Hall of Fame in recognition of his humanitarian work with G.O.A.L.S. He was a Vietnam era Navy veteran and had received a Master’s Degree in Organizational Behavior from Roosevelt University in Illinois.
Doug was an avid reader as well as a collector of baseball cards and sports memorabilia. He also enjoyed arguing politics over the Internet and communicating with other fans of Syracuse University football and baseball.
His favorite pastime in Boca Raton, FL. was dining out and was a well-known and loved personality within the restaurant community in his wheelchair. As you may already know he also worked with local the restaurant owners to establish a successful annual fundraiser named —“A TASTE OF THE GRAPE”. (http://www.atasteofthegrape.com)
Even though Doug has left us, his dream and task remain. G.O.A.L.S., INC. will continue to operate under the guidance of his brother Rober and his Board of Directors. In 2006, Doug named Pat Brubaker as Executive Director of the foundation. She will continue to
act in that capacity. However, we will be making a few changes.
