Stand Among Friends Stand Among Friends is an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with neurological disorders. Started in the fourth quarter of 1997, Stand Among Friends (SAF) has worked diligently and continues its efforts to promote research, education and advocacy of all neurological disorders. These disorders include spinal cord injury, stroke, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS and other central nervous system disorders. The National Spinal Cord Injury Association The primary mission of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association (NSCIA) is to work to empower individuals and families with spinal cord injury issues to make informed choices and take actions to achieve their highest level of independence and personal fulfillment. The site is a treasure chest of information for people who are spinal cord-injured and has links to state and regional organizations. The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation (CRPF) is committed to funding research that develops treatments and cures for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury and other central nervous system disorders. The Foundation also vigorously works to improve the quality of life for people living with disabilities through its grants program, paralysis resource center and advocacy efforts. Through their Quality of Life Grants program, CRPF has granted close to $3.5 million since 1999 to nonprofit organizations that help improve the daily lives of people living with paralysis, particularly spinal cord injuries. The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, a Center of Excellence at the University of Miami School of Medicine, is the world's largest, most comprehensive research center dedicated to finding more effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for paralysis that results from spinal cord injury. The Miami Project was founded in 1985 through the vision and dedicated efforts of Dr. Barth Green, an internationally recognized expert in the field of spinal cord injury. National attention focused on the Miami Project following the injury of football legend Nick Buoniconti's son, Marc. The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis raises money exclusively for the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. SCI Info Pages SCI Info Pages is a free resource for those with spinal cord injury and other disabling injury or disease of the spine. The site provides health information plus, resources related to spinal cord injuries and related links with descriptions. Wheelchair Getaways, Inc. Wheelchair Getaways, Inc. provides wheelchair accessible van rentals throughout the country for people with disabilities. As an added plus, they also list accessible vans for sale! Scootaround For scooter and wheelchair rentals, Scootaround is a simple, convenient, worldwide scooter and wheelchair rental service; able to arrange for scooter or wheelchair rentals in over 500 locations across North America and around the world 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. Access-Able Travel Source Access-Able Travel Source is dedicated to aiding travelers with disabilities and the mature traveler by providing practical information needed to go across town or around the world. Their database includes information about accessible vehicles and accommodations plus, everything to make a trip fun and exciting. Information is available about scuba diving for persons with all types of disabilities plus, accessible safaris, sailing, raft trips, a place where you can learn to skysail and seashore areas that have beach wheelchairs. It is a great resource for the disabled traveler. New Mobility This is the web site for New Mobility Magazine; one of the finest resources for Disability Culture and Lifestyle. Newmobility.com is a tremendous research and communication tool for anyone with an interest in disability issues. The monthly magazine is available by subscription on line and in print. Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago Since 1954, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago has been a trusted source of rehabilitation care, research, education and advocacy for people with disabilities. Visit this RIC site for more on education, research and patient care. Very Special Arts (VSA) VSA arts is an international nonprofit organization founded in 1974 by Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith. VSA arts is creating a society where people with disabilities can learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts. Designated by The United States Congress as the coordinating organization for arts programming for persons with disabilities, VSA arts offers arts-based programs in creative writing, dance, drama, music and the visual arts. Nearly five million people with disabilities participate in VSA arts programs every year through a network of affiliates in 49 states and the District of Columbia and 64 countries worldwide. Mike Utley Foundation Mike Utley sustained a spinal cord injury while playing for the Detroit Lions in 1991. His "Thumbs Up" foundation is dedicated to raising money for research and helping people with spinal cord injuries. Assistive Technology and Rehabilitation Services Assistive Technology and Rehabilitation services are available in nearly every state. Their mission varies from state to state but all agencies strive to improve life for people with handicapping conditions. Please click on the link, find your state and see what’s available. Dennis Walters As a promising golf professional, Dennis was injured nearly 30 years ago in a freak accident. He taught himself to play golf again and now tours the country, giving exhibitions and inspirational talks. Dennis is an inspiration to golfers of all abilities and facilities and has information to share about golf for the disabled on his web site: “Anyone who would like information on playing golf as I do please contact me.
